Benson Creek

Benson Creek - Low (~1.5ft)

Benson Creek
On Saturday I picked up my new creek boat, a Bliss-Stick Huka, in Bowling Green. I traded the Dagger Rival canoe that I had for it. I paddled one in New Zealand in 2004 and liked it back then and after paddling it on Sunday I still like this boat today.

On Saturday night I attended the NPFF as the area got hit with some good rains. With the Benson running, Josh and I decided to run it instead of the Rockcastle on Sunday.

The Benson was a great run, very local to my house, a little low, but still fun. There were a couple of good surf spots this day and the falls were runnable, though I walked around while Josh ran them. He fought pretty good to keep from getting pulled back in. Others that ran the falls made it look pretty easy.

The run was quick, maybe a couple of hours. But I was able to try out the Huka and I really liked it. I can't wait to do some overnighters in it.

Huka Falls

In March of 2004 I was in New Zealand for a couple of months. I had just started kayaking back then and was doing some kayaking in New Zealand. There was one place that I was in awe of over there, Huka Falls. I just marveled at the thing and though I had read that people had kayaked it, I just couldn't believe it was possible back then. But here, taken from the Bliss-Stick website, is someone doing just that.
